The 100 - a show where badass women reign!

Allright, so The 100 is a post-apocalyptic TV show that I'm kinda obssessed with. I started watching it a few years ago just as the first season had finished airing, and I've followed it faithfully ever since. Now, in just 18 days, will the first episode of the fifth season premier and I have a hard time thinking about anything else. The gist of the first season is this: Set ninety-seven years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, when a spaceship housing humanity's lone survivors sends one hundred juvenile delinquents back to Earth, in hopes of possibly re-populating the planet. Ofc a lot has happened since the first season, but I will try not to spoil the plot toooo much while writing this. I'm not planning on reviewing the show, this is more of a... tribute to the strong female leads this show has. One would think that in 2018 female warriors and female leaders wouldn't be such a rare thing to see on modern television, but sadly it's still a rare phenomenon, one that the 100 thankfully breaks with its inspiring characters! I will therefore present these characters to you one by one, and tell you what makes them such inspirations to women while praising the CW network for finally making a show they can be proud of.

1. Clarke Griffin

Clarke is the main character of the show, and one of the most impressive females I've ever come across on television. She originally comes from a privileged background, and when they first land on the ground she has a hard time making the others respect and listen to her, because she is "one of the privileged." But her bravery, intelligence, compassion and willingness to sacrifice herself body and soul to save her people makes her an astounding leader of the 100. She becomes the undisputable leader of the delinquents together with Bellamy Blake, and her abilities of dimplomacy, mercy and ruthlessness earns her the respect of the leaders of their enemies (even earning the nickname Wanheda, meaning Commander of Death). She will do anything to keep her people alive, and she will try to do what's right. However, sometimes you have to make hard, impossible choices and she has the guts to make the descisions that no else can make (no matter the personal cost to herself). And as if this wasn't amazing enough, Clarke also happens to be openly bisexual, and this my friends is EXTREMELY rare on television. The show is full of bisexual, lesbian and gay characters, and what I love most about it is that this is never commented on or brought up, everyones sexual preference is accepted without fuss or argument. I hope our future world will be as good as this one.

2. Lexa kom Trikru

While Clarke is a tough-as-nails leader she is but a decent fighter, prefering words and cunning over swords and guns. But Lexa... well she was cunning allright, but she was also a FUCKING BADASS. Commander of the twelve clans, Lexa was a central character of seasons 2 and 3 of the show, and Clarkes love interest throughout those two seasons. She was a prophesised leader of her people, and literally fought her way to the throne at a young age. She also managed to do what no leader before her had done, she united the twelve grounder clans and their leaders and became the first and last Commander of the twelve clans. She knew when to show mercy and when to be heartless, and she was the first one to agree to peace between her and Clarkes people, showing herself capable of abandoning old Grounder principles in order to create a better world for everyone. A strong woman of mind, body and spirit, capable of leading thousands of opposing people, Lexa is one hardcore woman worthy of our admiration.

3. Octavia Blake

Octavia Blake. This is a character that has come a looong way from the girl she was in season 1. "The girl under the floor" as she was known, has by season 4 become an unwilling leader of the survivors in the Bunker. She was young at the start, but never naive, and it wasn't until she hit the ground that she started discovering who she truly is. She was the first person to try and find peace with the Grounders, and even became romantically involved with one of them (our dear Lincoln). Octavia not only accepted their culture - she embraced it. Under the tutelage of Indra (another strong woman) she became a warrior queen, known as Skyripa (death from above). Admittedly her reign is a bloody one, Octavia isn't as diplomatic or merciful as Clarke or even Lexa, but sometimes the only way to make people listen is with a knife to their throat. That being said, she is still one of the most openminded characters on the show, and even though she often lands in a moral grey zon she has a strong code of honor and a great sense of loyalty to the people she loves. In other words, another woman worthy of our love and respect!

4. Raven Reyes

Clarke is a natural leader, Lexa is both a Commander and a fighter and Octavia is a true warrior. But Raven, well Raven is a bloody genius. I'm not even kidding here, she IS a genius, the team would be dead a dozens times over by now if it wasn't for Raven and her marvelous brain. She was a Zero-G Mechanic while living up in space, she was the best damn mechanic they had, capable of fixing basically everything. And her creativity knows no bounds, which allows her to get the team out alive from seemlingly impossible situations, giving them all hope when hope seems lost. She doesn't take bullshit from anyone and has a very clear moral code that she won't let anyone violate. I honestly love Raven, because she is celebrated for her mind and not her fighting prowess or her beauty. And even though she isn't a leader in the typical sense, she is such a vital part of the group that she often becomes a co-pilot of sorts, always taking part in calling the shots. You gotta admire a woman on televison that is important because of her intelligence and nothing less.

And now some honorable mentions! There are so many amazing women on this show that I can't really go through them all, but some short introductions of a few other women are in order.

5. Abby Griffin = Clarkes mother and at one point the leader of the people from the Ark, Abby is one hell of a strong female with a clear moral standing and a strong protective instinct. She is also a Doctor, in other words another intelligent woman worth celebrating!

6. Anya = Leader of Trikru during season 1, under the Command of Lexa ofc. She was the first authoritative figure of the Grounders that the kids came into contact with, and even though she and Clarke had a rocky start they reached a truce at the beginning of season 2. She is another badass example of one of many female leaders on the show.

7. Echo kom Azgeda = Introduced during the second season of the 100, Echo was an enemy of the people from the Ark for a long time, expect for the soft spot she ended up developing for Bellamy Blake. She is second in command to Queen Nia and later to King Roan, and a loyal and fierce warrior of her people. Not to mention her skills with swords and crossbows... Jesus H Roosevelt Christ.

8. Luna = Leader of Floukru, she leads a peaceful group of people living on an old oil rig in the ocean. However, she is a Nightblood like Lexa and fought in the bloody game for the throne. She probably would have won as well, if she hadn't run away, sick of the fighting and the killing. She could kill you in a heartbeat though, one has to respect that kind of power.

Excepet for these women, we also have Indra, Harper, Emori, Maya, Gaia, Ontari, Niylah and Gina to mention but a few more. That said, the show is full of amazing characters, even some extrodinary guys as well. Roan (king of Azgeda) Jaha and Kane (leaders of the Ark at different points in time) Murphy (typical bad boy with a tainted soul) and of course Monty Green (our boy genius) and Bellamy Blake. And because I love Bellamy so much, I will have to devote one section to him, I just can't help myself.

(9) Bellamy Blake

Bellamy Blake is Octavias older brother and co-leader of the delinquents together with Clarke, and damn but this boy will rip you apart. In the beginning he is a bit of an anti-hero, but despite his sometimes selfish decisions the kids admire him - like Clarke says, he inspires them. Bellamy and his family came from the working class, the opposite of Clarkes privileged upbringing, and in the beginning he and Clarke have a hard time seeing eye to eye on things. But soon it becomes clear that if they want to get out alive, they will have to relay on each other to keep everyone and themselves in one piece. Even the producer, Jason Rothenberg, says that "Clarke is the brain and Bellamy is the heart, without one the other wont function." Bellamy tends to think with his heart and act on emotion rather than with a clear and logical plan, while Clarke tries to make rational and sometimes seemingly heartless decisions. Together they even each other out, and complement one another not unlike Yin and Yang. Like Jaha says, leadership is a lonely pursuit and they're lucky to have each other. Murphy even calls Clarke the Queen and Bellamy the King, while Raven says that Clarke is Queen and Bellamy is her knight. So yes, while this is a tribute to women, Bellamy needs a section because he is one of the most well-developed and lovable characters I've come across in a long while. He makes mistakes and faces the same hard choices Clarke does, and sometimes it becomes unclear who the good guys really are. But he does the best that he can, and his bravery, selflessness and protective instinct makes him an inspiration to the rest of the kids and that is the reason they follow him. At the end of season 4, Clarkes parting words to Bellamy was that now he would have to use both his brain and his heart to keep the crew alive without her. Question is, how will that have affected the person he is, or rather was? I for one can't wait to find out! Or to see those two reunite again, it's sure to be EPIC!
