It's been a long time since I've come over a series that I really loved, and even longer since I've had the compulsion to share this love with strangers, but that was before I started watching The Ancient Magus' Bride (Mahoutsukai no Yome). Now, this is an anime series, and I know that for some anime isn't all that appealing. However I think this might be the series to change your minds, because it sure as hell changed mine!

Our protagonist is Chise Hatori, a young orphaned girl who has lost all hope. Her mother committed suicide when Chise was very young, and ever since then she's been shipped between lots of distant relatives, all who want nothing to do with her because she's, well...strange, according to normal people. She becomes scared of nothing, speaks at empty air, runs from invisible monsters. Except these creatures she sees don't just exist in her imagination of course. Unwanted and cast away Chise sells herself into slavery and is to be sold at an auction. What starts as a hopeless, bleak story quickly takes a turn for the better though, when Elias walks up the stage to Chise and buys her before anyone else has a chance. 

 

 

And yeah yeah I know he looks terrifying, but he's a real softie okay? Well, most of the time...episode 7 and 8 are a bit scary. Anyhow! So, Elias is a Mage, a very powerful one. Mages are rare nowdays as well, and Elias is one of the last of his kind. But Chise also happens to possess an uncommon power, which gets her the attention of many, and most of the attention isn't in her best interest. Elias want's her to become his apprentice, to study and learn a mages' craft from him. As the title of the show goes it also becomes clear that he hopes for more from her than that as well, with time at least. They are quite a unique match, a young girl who whises for death, unloved and unwanted for most of her life, and an Ancient Mage who possess little to no humanity. Surprisingly this works really well, since Chise shows herself capable of accpeting Elias for all his... quirks and starts teaching him what it means to be human, while Elias gives Chise a place to call home for the first time in her life, and gives her the unconditional love she's in desperate need of. And I'm not gonna lie, at first you might get a Beauty and the Beast kind of feeling, but let me assure you that this love story is unparalleled and can stand on its own two feet. 

 

 

 

But it's not just Chise and Elias that makes this anime so amazing. The world is simply...astounding! We have dragons and faeries and chimeras and evil sorcerers and the setting is gorgeous and the coloring and the storytelling and the secondary characters are wonderful and touching and gaaah omg I love this okay?! It's fantasy at its best, with a heart-wrenching story and deep characters and a love worth rooting for. Please just do me a favor and watch it? Pleeease? You won't regret it!
